Because the number of applicants will likely exceed the school’s authorized enrollment capacity, students are selected through a random lottery. When a student is chosen, siblings of the applicant (within the same household) are also invited for admission, provided openings exist. In subsequent years, students currently admitted are given preference for re-enrollment. Siblings of enrolled students are given preference relative to other applicants.
WSA will not discriminate in its admission policies and practice
What if my child is not accepted in the lottery?
Each student’s application will remain in the lottery pool until they are accepted or the pool is closed for the school year. Each year a new lottery pool will begin and student applications will not be rolled over.

Wallace Stegner Academy is open to all students and does not have admissions requirements, except in accordance with statute. Applications received for children who are not old enough to attend school for the school year they are applying will not be accepted and are encouraged to apply for enrollment the following year.
Additionally, any student who has been expelled from any school, including Wallace Stegner Academy, during the preceding twelve months, may be denied enrollment.
What is my child's chance of being accepted?
This cannot be quantified due to the number of students applying each day for a limited number of openings. Also, we are unable to predict when and how many student openings may occur based on the number of students who will accept or decline an offer of admission.
How many potential students are on the enrollment list?
This cannot be determined due to the number of students applying each enrollment period for a limited number of openings.
Is there anything I can do to improve my child's chance of admission to WSA?
Some applicants are eligible to receive preferential enrollment, they include: (1) applicants with a sibling that is already attending the school; (2) an applicant whose parent is a “founding member” of the school; and (3) an applicant whose parent is a teacher employed by the school.
Extra volunteer hours, special favors, services, or donations are not accepted in exchange for special preference.
What is the enrollment capacity for WSA?
For 2016-2017, WSA’s authorized student enrollment is 690 students. Over the subsequent two years WSA’s enrollment will be increased to reach its maximum enrollment of 810 students; 90 students per grade for K-8. The maximum enrollment is dictated by the State of Utah.

When will I be notified of an open position?
We will have enrollment opportunities beginning in January of each year and continuing throughout the year as needed. After the first lottery of each year existing student numbers need to be assessed and siblings given preference, after which the lottery will be continued to fill any available openings. Any additional lotteries will occur in February or March. If your child is selected, you will receive an e-mail or a phone call. Parents/Guardians must either accept or reject the position within the period of time stated in the e-mail . If you choose not to attend, or if you do not contact the school within the given time frame, your student will be declined and removed from the lottery database and the position will be offered to another eligible student.

How do I transfer to a new school?
Utah State Law governs student transfers between Utah’s public charter schools and school districts.
If a student has accepted enrollment to WSA for the school year and the parent wishes to withdraw the student from WSA for enrollment in another Utah charter school or school district, the parent of a student enrolled at WSA must obtain approval from both the WSA administration and the Utah school district or charter school in which enrollment is sought. The WSA administration will provide such approval once notice of approval by the new school as been received.
If a student wishes to enroll at WSA but has accepted enrollment to another Utah charter school for the school year, the student’s parent must obtain approval from both the WSA administration and the Utah charter school in which the student is already enrolled. Student records will be released as soon as all appropriate paperwork is completed.
